Rihanna Takes Fashion Risk with Sandals and Socks at NY Outing

Sandals and socks are fashion’s most D-listed combination for years, but superstar Rihanna did not mind flaunting her black-and-gray combo Sunday, March 15, 2015, at a New York outing after a promotional conference for her Dreamworks animated movie, Home.

During the outing, the Grammy-awarded diva wore a huge, black puffy jacket over matching grey cotton sweatshirt and sweatpants in lieu of her usual high heels and dress to keep warm. For her footwear, she wore grey socks with black “B***h” prints and fur-lined black flat sandals. She was no less chic with light, bronze makeup and a half up and half down hairdo.

Much earlier, the Barbadian diva attended a press conference for Home at Mandarin Oriental wearing a similar footwear theme. She was glamorous in an Adam Selman collared evergreen dress with small black bow prints, which she paired with green pumps and black socks.

As early as May 2014, fashion watchers and experts have forecasted that sandals and socks would become trendy for autumn. The sandals-and-socks tandem was known to be an elderly fashion statement and ridiculous looking, but style does evolve over time. Today, it is acceptable if not encouraged to wear socks with sandals.

According to stylists, socks and sandals are great to wear with a cute dress and chunky jacket. The combo dubbed as “stocks and socks” may not work well with some clothing pieces, but experts suggest choosing thick and ribbed hiking socks matched with double-strapped flats. Some celebs took the stocks and socks combo to another level with pumps or high heels and girly, lacy or colored stockings. Overall, it is just a matter of personal preference and having the confidence to wear the peculiar combo.

Fashion is not something that Rihanna is naïve about being the music industry’s top style icon and producer of fashion reality TV series, Styled to Rock. Last Friday, Dior said it picked the singer as the face for its Secret Garden campaign, making Rihanna Dior’s first African-American ambassador.
