CELEBS SADDLE UP

More and more celebrities are getting on their bike! Gone are the days of stretch limousines and Hummers with blacked out windows – you’re more likely to see your favourite star whizzing past on two wheels now. The great and good are saddling up for a variety of reasons – some for health and fitness, some simply to look hip and some for good old fashioned transportation purposes. Think about it – in congested cities like Los Angeles, New York and London cycling can be the quickest way to get between all those important appointments and the nippiest way to escape the paparazzi!

Here we look at just some of the stars who have been spotted on bicycles recently…

For some it’s a family activity – both Thor star Chris Hemsworth and Ray Donovan actor Liev Schreiber (the latter along with partner Naomi Watts) have recently been seen cycling with their children in Malibu and Santa Monica respectively. Both Dads have put in most of the legwork, with the little ones being towed behind in bike trailers.

Charity is another reason for celebrities to pedal – and an admirable one at that. Davina McCall hit the headlines recently when she endured a gruelling Sport Relief challenge of running, swimming and cycling the 500 miles between Edinburgh and London. When London’s bike share sponsors Barclays donated advertising space to volunteer charity CSV, record producer and one of the charity’s supporters Pete Waterman and a group of volunteers got on the bikes to celebrate. Dame Kelly Holmes swapped running for cycling to support cycling charity Sustrans’ Pedal On event. Meanwhile television personality Jeff Brazier has taken part in a series of challenging bike rides for charity Norwood – including cycles in the hot climates of Sri Lanka and Madagascar. And Lorraine Kelly and Ross Kemp helped launch the Help for Heroes Hero Ride 2014 in a recent photo-call outside the UK capital’s County Hall.

And of course sometimes it is all in the name of entertainment. Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville was recently being filmed on the concourse of the BBC on a fold-up bike, complete with cycling helmet and high visibility jacket – the scene was for new comedy series W1A, the follow up to the Olympic satire Twenty Twelve in which Bonneville’s character also travelled on a distinctively small bicycle. Ben Foster – whose film credits include 3:10 to Yuma and Lone Survivor – recently pulled on the iconic yellow jersey to film scenes in France for a forthcoming movie about disgraced Tour de France legend Lance Armstrong.

Other notable celebrity cyclists include: designer Vivienne Westwood, part of whose latest autumn winter collection was described as “inspired by cycling” and “designed for the alternative urban commuter”; actors Alec Baldwin, Matthew Broderick, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Bosworth, Will Arnett, Famke Janssen and Brooke Shields, and musician Joe Jonas – all of whom have been seen cycling in New York; model Heidi Klum, funny man Steve Martin, Dennis Quaid and acting couple Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, representing the West Coast in Los Angeles and its surrounding settlements; fellow Hollywood star Hugh Jackman, who got on two wheels to explore Paris last year; Paris Hilton who cycled not her namesake city, but bike-mad Dutch capital Amsterdam; Owen Wilson – perhaps the most globetrotting celebrity cyclist, having been snapped biking in Miami, Paris and Rio de Janeiro to name a few cities; Pharrell Williams – often spotted with a bike and still managing to look dapper; and last but not least US President Barack Obama. Then there is arguably the UK’s best known cyclist (sorry Sir Bradley and Sir Chris) – London Mayor Boris Johnson.

Next time you go for a cycle in London, keep your eyes peeled – you never know who’ll pedal up beside you!
