Beauty and youth tips from 1910
A lot have changed in the last century, but there is something that has not changed at all. Women’s search for eternal youth and beauty advice existence. In the book Health and Beauty Hints, from the distant 1910, the author Margaret Mixter stresses the importance of having your skin firm and wrinkle free, especially on the face and neck and massage vigorously recommends using oils and ointments. Skin has the tendency to drop over the years so all muscles should be rubbed upwards, especially when massaging the face you should force from the bottom up, she writes.
For night time Mixter recommends using a mixture of almond oil, beeswax, lanolin, whale fat, rosewater and hazelnut. The application, however, differs depending on the shape of the face: Rub gently to make the cheeks look round, she writes, if you have a double chin rub with power to dissolve the fat. Another way to keep a woman’s skin clean is coming into contact with nature: A walk in the rain for people who have a tendency to colds is an excellent tonic for the facial skin, the book notes.
As regards the care of the hair Mixter proposes something that today, thankfully, we avoid. Shampoo no more frequently than once in three weeks! Purification of the hair was done with a dry material and particular cornstarch. After using cornmeal it should be removed with a large soft brush. According to Mixter if one sits in the sun it gives tone and vigor to the hair and is ideal to let them dry under the rays of the sun. It is also recommended to avoid shampooing the hazy or cloudy days. Combing hair before a woman goes to sleep is very important. Recommends twenty brushes after all knots are gone with the use of a comb, she writes.
Physical exercise is good for the body and skin and this is something that will be timeless. Appropriate clothing is certainly an indicative of the era. Mixter highlights the importance of proper attire because the exercises should be done in front of an open window to cleanse the skin, she explains. Good is also, according to the author, to select woolen slippers. A great exercise to maintain a woman fit is the household stresses Mixter.
It is an excellent exercise for a girl who wants to have a round, beautiful body because the household helps to strengthen the body and beauty.
